I thought this was going to be the last piece that I ever had played at the University of North Texas - that turned out not to be the case. Perhaps it was hubris or something, but I fully expect my degree to be done in four years and this was the last piece on the last composer’s concert - something that I wrote this piece specifically for. However, after a meeting with my advisors and my dissertation committee, it was clear that I was going to need to spend the better part of the next year finishing my dissertation document, so this farewell ended up being something of a “see you next week.” I don’t say that because I’m busted up about it – my 5th year ended up being one of the most joyous. You never know what’s going to happen; creativity shouldn’t be about “reaching a goal” so much as reaching one goal and then seeing the next one further down the road. Go get it!
